During the late 1920s and 1930s, the abstraction of natural forms became fashionable and designers began to concentrate purely on
line. ‘California’ originally called ‘Modern’ was designed in 1928 by the GP & J Baker studio probably inspired by the 1925
L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industrials Modernes held in Paris. The stylised exotic flowers and leaves of this
beautiful design provide a perfect example of 20th century modernism.
